ICYMI: Chair Schneider on Press Call Condemning House GOP Budget: “Republicans campaigned on lower costs and cutting the deficit, but that just turns out to be another one of their broken promises”
New Dem Chair Brad Schneider laid out how the House Republican budget wages a war on working families already dealing with the Cost of Trump’s Chaos and Musk’s Mess, cutting health care, nutrition, and education funding to give billionaires more tax cuts.
ICYMI: This morning, New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10) joined a press call hosted by Families Over Billionaires alongside fellow New Dem Members Rep. Brendan Boyle (PA-02), Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, Rep. Pete Aguilar (CA-33), House Democratic Caucus Chairman, and Rep. Veronica Escobar (TX-16).

Throughout my life, every election has always been about the economy, even going back to the famous phrase, “it's the economy stupid” – and that was certainly true in this last election. Yet at a time when the American people are struggling to make ends meet, let alone get ahead – the cost of Trump's chaos and Elon Musk's mess – what the Republicans are proposing in this budget is actually going to make life even harder on the American people.
The headline is that House Republicans are doing the bidding of their puppet master, Elon Musk, proposing a plan that helps lower the costs to the billionaires like him – the people we saw sitting in the front row with the inauguration – and makes life more expensive for hardworking families, the people we're hearing from today. Adding more than four and a half trillion dollars to our debt, making it even harder for our children in the future.
Republicans campaigned on lower costs and cutting the deficit, but that just turns out to be another one of their broken promises. This plan is going to hurt Americans in three specific ways. The Republican plan slashes funding for Medicaid – health care which one in three Americans rely on for life, life saving services. Low-income families, veterans, children, all depend on Medicare. On top of that, hospitals, health care centers will be forced to lay off doctors and nurses. And even our first responders, our fire departments, will see a cut in their funding.
They are also going after nutrition programs like SNAP, which more than 40 million Americans use every month to put food on the table. This program helps feed struggling families and hungry kids. And American farmers in our communities across the nation, ranchers who rely on this support to feed the nation.
House Republicans want to destroy the Department of Education and cut education by $330 billion. If you want to destroy our future, no better way than to not educate our kids. Millions of hardworking families will struggle to educate their kids and see their state and local income taxes go up. Schools will be forced to execute mass layoffs of teachers and other employees who are devoting their lives to protecting our future by educating our children.
The American people are desperate for lower prices. But since Trump took office, inflation has increased and the cost of gas, groceries, rent, electric bills – everything has gone up this week. CEOs of major corporations like Ford and the steel maker Nucor sounded the alarm on the cost of Trump's chaos. Still, the Republicans continue to move forward with their disastrous plan on our economy and on our people, all to benefit their supporters.
I'm proud to stand here with my colleagues across the Caucus and stand up and loudly speak against this plan. And as the New Dems and Democrats at large, we are focused on making life more affordable for all Americans.
